Do not put fresh manure near your plants, it can kill them. You need to compost them, then mix them with your soil. Just start a pile somewhere in the back of your garden and add kitchen waste to it. as well. It will make black gold! Add it an inch at a time to your beds and you will be rewarded with a bountiful garden. Bone meal is good stuff, epson salts I use in my roses…as bone meal, but haven’t used in my veggies. I do use a little lime because of all the organics, just to sweeten the soil a touch.

Last year my husband and I built a raised bed using railroad ties for our veggies. We put only horse manure in it. The tomatoe plants grew to be over 6 foot tall. Weeding was simple, I just pulled the weeds and threw them out of the bed, did not want anything from the pulled weed left in the bed. You can use one tablespoon of epsom salt around the base of the plant with water. This is also good to keep bugs away.

buy fresh fish and place it under the plant.
Native Americans used fish as fertilizer for corn.
I have heard of dead chickens with lime used as well.

An alternative to bone meal is egg shells. Wash the egg shells out, crush them, not to a powder but almost, sprinkle them on a baking sheet and bake them till they are a light brown. Then sprinkle them around your tomatoes/veggies. Both the bone meal and egg shells are a source of calcium which is good for fruiting.
