I’m using a self-supporting Topsy-Turvy planter with Miracle Grow tomato fertilizer once a week. The plants are all growing very well on an outdoor porch with plenty of breeze albeit not many bees. Can tomato plants fertilize or rather pollinate themselves or do they require pollination from another plant?

The tomato plant is hermaphrodite, ie it has both male and female flowers, so that it can fertilize itself. This is not the same self pollinate, such as pollination transfer of pollen related. Hot and wet makes sticky pollen, making it difficult for the plant to release pollen. It is necessary to pollinate some vibration, which is normally supplied by the bees. Try to shake the stems of plants, they vibrate and to help them pollinate. You can also sprinkle with a small brush to transfer pollen from male to female flowers.

Do not buy under turverys Your money matters. See how your plant is growing again. With five gallon buckets next time. (Or a pot).

tomato plants with lots of male sexual organs (ie stamens) and female sexual organs (eg, stamp) on the same plant, so they can make self-pollination (cross-pollination is not necessary). For a better harvest, using heirloom seeds. Give exceptionally good yield, color, taste and nutrition. Furthermore, the use biofertilizers! KGRBotaniker, Ph. D. Research Scholar
